The Railway Inn Wassail

Tuesday 17th January 2017

The Railway Inn in Sandford is delighted to be hosting its first Village Wassail in January.

It will take place on the evening of Tuesday 17 January 2017,  at The Railway Inn, Sandford.

The Wassail is a traditional ceremony that sees apple trees blessed with cider, and awoken from their winter slumber. By creating as much noise as possible, Wassailers ward away the “evil spirits”  from the orchards, all to ensure a fantastic apple harvest – and cider - the coming year.

The Railway’s Village Wassail will start with a procession and ceremony led by the Green Man and the Mendip Morrismen, and will conclude with a Wassail supper at the Thatchers Cider owned pub, with plenty of mulled cider to keep warm.

Martin Thatcher will be joining the Wassailers. He says, “The Wassail ceremony is a true Somerset tradition and we’re very pleased to be welcoming the Mendip Morrismen to the Railway Inn to lead our first village Wassail.”

Tickets, that include the ceremony, mulled cider and supper, are available from The Railway Inn, Sandford, 01934 611518, price £20.
